Plants to use in Southend

Southend-on-Sea in Essex can be a challenging location for choosing the right plants. This is largely down to the fact our soil is mostly very dense soil and we also get quite strong winds being coastal, two factors that many plants do not like. You then have the conditions specific to your garden, for example sunny spots vs sunny spots, condition of the soil in your specific garden and other factors.

All this makes it hard to give a definitive list of what plants to use in Southend, however there are some plants which are the workhorses that are dependable in difficult circumstances. These include buddleja (butterfly bush), hydrangea, viburnum (also strongly scented whish is an added bonus), and cornus (aka dogwood) some of which have an amazingly vibrant bark to give winter interest whilst the rest of the garden is largely dormant.

It is worth noting that you can always enhance the soil you have in your garden, look out for another blog post dedicated to this topic!
